Reflections on Day 3 DNC, and the Great Not Good Songs of the Day
Somehow I missed the heat wave that is "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock a great little trifle to end the summer. Though the video link has a mere 15 million hits, it has not entered rotation into my Pandora lineup yet, nor my consciousness.
But a song that did do just that yesterday afternoon is my song of the day and it was the song of last night's pre-dinner family dance: CHBB by Speechwriters LLC, the third song down on the player as of this writing. Those 95 plays today are probably all from me! I'm listening to it now on manual auto-replay.
Still thinking about my HRH posting a bit, but here's some thoughts of the day:
a. Richardson scheduled (per CNN) to speak after Kerry, gets no air time, probably frozen out on the backstage craft service table by Clintons, too. I figured at the time that this was the ultimate f-u from the Clinton wing. But it turns out he got upgraded to first class after getting bumped from his flight - now he speaks in prime time tonight. Emily would be proud.
b. Kerry delivers blistering, professional speech, hits mark perfectly. My only thought while listening: Where the F WERE YOU WHEN YOU WERE RUNNING MOFO? Classic. New thought for you John: Last four years is your windsurfing, no balls, waited too long to fight back fault.
c. Bill Clinton gives the best long speech in America. I heard him live in a hotel ballroom for an hour in summer 07 and he could have gone for another one no problem for him or me, or rest of audience, who were not by and large his demographic whatsoever. Unlike his wife, who I think did a great job in delivery, a great job in one liners, and a lousy job in content and making the case for the candidate rather than herself, Bill really did hit a home run. He even looked good for the first time in a while, probably because he's sleeping more (and drinking less?) than he was at the end of the primary season. I'm liking the blue tie theme the guys have been going with, too, but I hate the stage and the badly placed diagonal-pillar-things that frame the jumbotron. Do you think that entire thing is HD? Do they put Cinemax After Dark on that screen on the overnight shift for the janitorial crew? It must be hard to be the ex-President at 54. If his wife had not run, he'd be a much bigger hero to the party. His best shot at redemption is for Obama to win, which I doubt is what he deep in his heart wants. Obviously, I don't know if that's true or not, but I do know he'd feel better if he listened to CHBB by Speechwriters LLC all weekend.
d. Biden speech: Suc-ky. Biden's son's speech: Su-per. Watch that boy, he's going to be a playa. In fact, in general, I'm extremely impressed with the quality of the oration of most of the lower-tier, and non-politico, speakers. The "everyday" Americans they have trotted out do a great job giving by far the biggest speech and the biggest audience receiving it they have ever experienced. Biden better do more Cheney '04, less Edwards '04 the next two months. I didn't like Biden as a choice at first blush, but I'm beginning to see the demographic appeal. Too bad he's from a state only slightly larger than my local park in terms of electoral votes. By the way, if Obama loses, look for Byah to be a contender for the next nomination.
e. I give Spielberg video a solid and fully uninspired 5. I still cry at Saving Private Ryan, but this was eh. Could have spooled next week in Minneapolis seamlessly, so what's the point? I suppose it's: Hey Independents, Democrats love and respect our military! Oliver Stone would have been a better choice for the moment the nation is in militarily.
f. I also was wondering last night while watching: where's Al Gore? Answer: tonight. After Stevie Wonder, but before Michael McDonald.
You know what would have put this convention over the top? Having Kid Rock and Speechwriters LLC perform.
