Reflections on Day 4 (and last) of DNC

First of all, I apologize to my reader from yesterday who spent hours googling Songwriters LLC, because the name of the band is actually Speechwriters LLC.  Having said that, a) the link was and is still right, b) I'm only presuming that if I did actually have a reader, then he or she would have spent hours googling this issue, and c) it's still a really good song.  I'd like to see a mashup of the Kid Rock video with this song, that would be fun.

You know what wasn't fun?  Watching a few hours of last night.  I am underwhelmed.  Outside venue was a poor choice on a few levels, but here's two: You can't connect effectively on TV on a live audience unless the viewers think and feel that you are connecting with the people who are there.  So Bill and Hillary get the benefit of lots of people sounding louder than they are and Barack got the opposite.  Second, the noises just reverberate instead of hitting.  The emotion is just washed out.  A Duke game always seems crazier than a Jets game.

Side notes:
What does Michael Dukakis do for a living?  Does he sell office supplies in Scranton?  Is he upset that Kerry and Gore didn't invite him into their millionaire losers' club?  Also, why is the most famous Jewish politician in America such an utter moron?  The lady voice they chose to be the announcer for all four days was terrible.  Cat would have been a much better choice.  I didn't mention in previous posts this speech but upon reflection it has to be a top 5 presentation of the week: Gov Schweitzer of Montanta.

Gore: Decent content, terrible oration.  Great words, still doesn't know how to hit his marks.  Likable, I believe would have been a fine choice, and once again can point only to himself for his loss.  Of course it was stolen from him, but that wouldn't have been possible with another state or two.  This part of his speech was the most compelling part for me.

Kaine, Udall, Ritter: Underwhelming all.  Missed Dean somehow, I'll have to go back to it.

Biden: Ok, you're friends with Harry (Reid).  But do you really need to give him two callouts?  Do you owe him money from a sports bet he legally placed for you?  Perhaps you bet the Jets would cover?  Fool.  But it was smart of you to come out for a moment for the 200 million people who still don't know who you are.

Richardson: Finally, a Democratic beard we can be proud of.  Understood his Spanish parts better than his English parts.  I say he's done on a national scale.  He'll get a Cabinet position if a win?

Regular people: Fantastic.  How did they do it?  I'm really impressed.  Also impressed with the person who had the job of finding them.

Barney Smith / Smith Barney line, fantastic.

But Pam from North Carolina was the best of the night, period.

And this one about Pam is great, recommended.

Obama the Man Video: Neat, compelling, better than Spielberg.  I presume therefore it was directed by PTA.  Anyone recognize the voiceover?  Because I did.  I am one of the nation's leading experts at identifying without any assistance the celebrity voiceover by the way.  Just ask my wife, who really could not care less but thinks it's nice that I've found something I think I'm good at that doesn't cost $1500 a night.  Hint: John Sayles.

Obama: In short, almost terrible.  Suffered from what I discussed before, didn't seem comfortable in his own skin as a speaker, didn't give enough power to the history of the moment or to King.  Ridiculously high expectations are also always hard to overcome, but in part that was set up by the venue.

The Moment: Having no experience personally with suffering 200 years of racism in this country, was this not a momentous thing?  Is it not a positive for the country overall that it occurred?  And is Obama afraid of just that?

Palin: I may have a soft spot for the name Sarah with two former highly-thought-of girlfriends (LRock - no worries baby, just saying) and of course my aunt, and the Governor certainly sounds nice on the first 10 minutes of the spinning, but this appears on its face to be a crazy choice.  Crazy like a fox.  I predict McCain is going to be well-lauded for the pick, especially from his base, but she surely ruins his entire argument on experience, no?  She must have good in-home help.

My Message of Hope: Barack, pal, here's the deal.  Listen to your wife and nobody else for the next few weeks.  You are easily set up to lose this thing.  If you lose, at least go down fighting and being yourself.  You showed glimpses last night, but if you're not careful you'll have the Kerry speaking spot in 8 years.  Be the ball.
