A Compendium of a Long Weekend's Worth of Thoughts

Some of What I Thought About This Weekend:

Work-Life
A friend called me Thursday to ask, do you care about long weekends now that you no longer work?  I laughed and said no, but I've changed my mind.  First, LRock DOES work, hard, and so it's great she's not.  Second, ZRock has no school and already he likes that.  Third, I tried to turn off my own work thoughts but only somewhat succeeded.

I think that taking a mental break from work is what's truly important for the work-life balance.  The turn off the phone mentality is something I have always discarded, literally, when working, and now believe is a must-do.  At the least, it must be compressed (e.g., I'm going on vacation this week and will only be online physically and mentally for 2 hours after my kids go to bed, or what have you).  I used to think that doing so in the morning was best, but now I think it turns the brain on too much, and it's best to do it after dinner, but before bed, with time for something (book, DVR, dvd) in between.  I have a specific plan to address this when I get back to full-time efforts.

Swear this is true: As I am writing this, I have Pandora on another window, and guess what starts playing?

LHE - May wish to skip if you don't know that LHE stands for off the top of your head, though (f) is ok
My thoughts on my meta-game were depressing Sunday after my worst (results, not dollars) session I can ever recall, and certainly since June, when I had my last (perceived) breakthrough.  But by Monday I felt much better about it, and today I feel great (not good).  Positive thinking, learn from your mistakes, analyze your results, make a change.  Also finally figured out who a specific poster was on a poker board I'm on too, which was cool.

a. Determining the difference between results oriented thinking slash variance and leaks.
b. Auto-betting the river heads up in position with a showdown hand when it's checked to you from the EP/Blind who led flop and turn.  I think that this is now a must and risk of c/r is worth it long term.
c. Putting in a stop loss of both racks and hours.  Concern that have false sense of security of how sharp I am late nowadays.
d. With a made but not locked hand raise the turn in position if planning on calling the river, especially with less than 3 callers.
e. Opening pots with a much tighter range.  I think this is a particularly poor leak of mine in full-ring games after I've gotten ahead.  Too cocky.
f. Put in a stop-win.  This is anathema to winning players and traders of all stripes, but I think that booking wins will be very good for me on both a dollar and emotional level, especially considering my lack of playing time.  When I can better handle the variance, I can change this.  But I was up 3 racks at the 20 and 3 racks at the 80 (first time I've played that high) and gave them back in each case.  That's unforgivable, and I intend to change it effective next game.

Information Exchange Between Potential Business Partners
In short, balancing the amount of information given versus the amount received.  I think there's a lot of information in this topic, and that it's not nearly as obvious as it seems on it's face.  This will need to be a future post of length.

Palin
Was captivated by this Friday, then tuned out except for headlines until today.  More this week.

Homemaking
The key to a comfortable home is without question a lack of clutter, controlling your possessions' ability to control your space.  I am currently at an enormous fail on this.

Your reward for getting this far is today's great not good song of the day: Here I Come by 2 Bit Pie, which is the second of their three songs on myspace as of this writing).  Have a great week!
