Movie and Comedy Reviews, Some News Links and a Song
Went to see a movie in a THEATER this weekend. Thanks to the magic of Craigslist, we now have a regular babysitter. This is crazy on a lot of levels, because a) the only thing that matters to me in the world is now cared for by someone from Craigslist (yes, she was vetted beforehand but still...), and b) it requires LRock and I to actually converse privately for a number of consecutive hours. The best part by far of our 2nd date was that a little nonsense tiff from earlier in the day did not lead to a ruined evening.
Had pretty decent Thai food and then saw Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. In a THEATER! At one point in my life, I would attend out 100 movies, 50 plays and 20 concerts a year. In the past year that average has been more like 3, 0, and 3.
NNIP falls into the good not great category. It has 45 minutes of greatness, 20 minutes of filler and 20 minutes of nonsense, including 5 minutes of gratuitous disgustingness that in my old-man stage nearly ruined it for me. Cinematography was fantastic (doesn't appear I've ever seen, or heard of much, past work), soundtrack was not as good as mainstream reviews put it, though I was pleased to see ArmyNavy with two tracks, direction was above average and acting compared to the average teen move was much above average. It was nice to see New York at night looking so great. Thanks to ARock and KRock for the tip, and thanks to ARockS for the suggestions that hopefully will make it into the next screening.
For some reason, I've decided that Tim Olyphant is a good actor, I suppose that reason being solely his acting in Deadwood. So for some reason I decided to watch Hitman on cable last night, and it was terrible. Enough said.
Disturbing comedy recommendations: If Dave Attell, Sarah Silverman's show, Jim Norton, etc. interest you, then Louis CK's current special on Showtime (but not the first 5-10 minutes, just skip over that) and The Life and Times of Tim are both worth watching.
News of the day:
Families are traveling to Nebraska to legally abandon their children.
Art Spiegelman profile.
A question I thought of after reading this: What would happen if China and Russia launched coordinated attack on Europe and/or USA?
Don't underestimate the true passion of a large group of people just because you don't understand them.
