After nearly 6 years of marriage, I'm starting to learn that specificity is something to be avoided.... in conversation, in compliments, in everything. The effort that you take will not be noticed or, worse, will be misconstrued somehow as a criticism.

"Your hair looks great. Did you get it done recently?" Sounds like a harmless compliment, right? But, what she hears is, "You didn't go to that expensive salon, did you?" Much better to say, "You look beautiful" and get on with your day.

Regardless of the outcome of this election, I'm profoundly disappointed in JM's choice of Palin. As you say, the selection was completely cynical and desperate in that it was designed to win the election (and what a ridiculous choice even with that premise!) with utter contempt for the singular qualification of the job of the Vice President, which, to paraphrase Powell, is to be capable of being the President. Even if he was hell bent on selecting a woman, the other two Republican female governors would have been far better choices. Rell in CT and Lingle in HI both have more experience as leaders and administrators. Lingle, in particular, would have been a sympathetic choice to those on the fence and even to Democrats. As for Republican Senators, he had his pick from 5 distinguished women, including Alaska's own Murkowski (daughter of the former Gov.). JM somehow managed to pick the absolutely least qualified (and from what we've seen, f@#$ing dumbest) of the Republican women. Even my parents, who would vote for a stone if it were Republican, are having a very difficult time with Palin.

You rationalize calling a raise from the blinds because you're getting some perceived discount and are then out of position for the rest of the hand with crap cards.

You call the flop with nothing but two overcards.

You haven't fully grasped the concept of pot odds, and you have no appreciation at all for implied odds.

You get check-raised on the turn and believe that your one pair is good.

You call the river when you absolutely know you're beat because, hey, it's a big pot.
